What’s a “Z(ed) drop?”

Thankfully, a “Z(ed) drop” is not of the “cow patty” variety dropped on a page. A “Z(ed) drop” is a small nugget of information that Z(ed) interjects whimsically onto a page because he believes it is something you should know.

Introducing Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy

Vitaeris320 Hyperbaric Chamber

What is Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy?

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy, or HBOT, is the medical use of oxygen in a pressurized environment, at a level higher than atmospheric pressure. Increased pressure allows oxygen to dissolve and saturate more effectively into the blood plasma, enabling it to reach deeper areas of the body where red blood cells (due to size) cannot, which yields a broad variety of positive physiological, biochemical, and cellular effects. This non-invasive therapy is the most trusted way to increase oxygen levels to all organs of the body.

Inflammation

Inflammation is an integral finding in many medical conditions and coincides with nearly all types of injuries and insults to the body. Studies demonstrate HBOT’s benefits for inflammation in:

  • Supporting anti-inflammatory processes at the cellular level
  • Reducing neuroinflammation
  • Decreasing gastrointestinal inflammation
  • Relieving soft tissue/joint inflammation
  • Preventing the onset of chronic inflammatory-related diseases

Autism Spectrum Disorder

HBOT is an emerging treatment that parents and physicians are utilizing to help relieve the effects of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Studies demonstrate HBOT helps decrease inflammation and improve cognitive functions.

Lyme Disease

Lyme disease is a bacterial infection caused by a spiral-shaped bacterium called Borrelia burgdorferi (Bb) that is transmitted by a tick bite. The Bb organism is adept at evading the body’s immune system by coating itself in the body’s own proteins and by entering certain types of cells to evade antibiotics. However, the Bb organism has been shown to be sensitive to high concentrations of oxygen at the cellular level. Studies demonstrate HBOT’s benefits for Lyme disease in:

  • Working in synergy with an antibiotic therapy
  • Increasing an antibiotic’s ability to incorporate into the Bb bacterium’s cell wall
  • Increasing oxygen free radicals

Mild-Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy

Using a Vitaris320® soft-chamber from Oxyhealth, we offer mild-hyperbaric oxygen therapy to our patients. Mild-HBOT is a much simpler procedure that consists of entering a hyperbaric chamber and experiencing an increase in pressure to 1.3 atmospheres (4 PSI). This serves as the highest pressure approved by the FDA for private use that allows for an extremely safe increase in tissue oxygen levels. The physiological increase in oxygen provided by mild-HBOT is enough to help individuals treat and prevent major long-term damages.
